Learn more about Joy Hakmé in the following MeetMyTalent interview:
Hi Joy, please tell us a little about you?
My name is Joy Hakmé. I’m a 27-year-old singer, pianist and musicologist. I’ve been a melomaniac ever since I was a child and therefore decided to turn my passion for music into a profession.
Who was your role model as a child?
Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.
Who has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why?
My parents! They divorced when I was young and to keep me distracted from their problems, my dad was very dedicated and used to take me to the conservatory and encouraged me to focus a lot on my piano studies and to sing. When I grew up, both of my parents encouraged me to study musicology in college. I also owe my beautiful mom a lot! She always believed in me and has been helping me out so much.
Did you go to music school?
Yes. I studied piano at the National Higher Conservatory of Music in Lebanon for 11 years and took classical (opera) singing with some private tutors. Besides, I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Musimedialogy and a Master of Arts in Musicology from Notre Dame University Lebanon.
When did you first start singing and performing?
At the age of 8! I used to be a soloist in my school choir and at Church. Also, I played several main roles in musicals at school.
Now tell us about your new single “Men Kawkab Tani”,How do you think it introduces you to fans?
I released “Men Kawkab Tani”, my second original, last October. It’s a joyful love song with a dynamic beat. It came out 6 months after my first original “3tezer”, which was a sad love song with a completely different mood. I chose this contrast in mood because I wanted to spread out joyful vibes through “Men Kawkab Tani” and to make people dance! Besides, the latter’s mood portrays my energetic personality more. I’d like to add that I’m usually an occidental singer, but I chose to sing my originals in Lebanese Arabic since it’s my native language.
Do you have plans to play out live a lot this summer in support of your new music?
Well, I had many pre-planned events but unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some were postponed and others were cancelled… (i hope everyone is safe 🙏🏻)
Who would you love to work with in the future? Who are some of your favorite artists right now?
That’s not an easy question to answer…
I have a lot of preferences and there are a lot of artists whom I’d be honored to work with..
To start with, on the local level, I would love to work with Marwan Khoury. I really love his music. Another Arabic artist whom I would really love to sing a duet with is Kadem Al Saher. On the global level, I dream of collaborating with Sam Smith. His voice is incredible!
My favorite artists in the time being are Julia Boutros, Kadem Al Saher, Marwan Khoury, Sam Smith, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, David Draiman and Beth Hart!
How active are you on social media? How important has it all been to your career so far?
I’m very active on social media, especially on Instagram, facebook, youtube and Anghami. Social media was the ultimate way in order to promote myself and my music, knowing that neither do I have a producer nor a production house helping me in financing my music and videos.
How would you describe your fashion style?
All my wardrobe is black! Hahaha. Well, most of it. I’m always up-to-date in fashion and I love shopping, as long as I’m avoiding fiery colors!
How’s a typical day in your life?
I usually wake up around 9 am and start my day with nescafe. I shower, dress up and go to university where I teach music. In the afternoon, I go to boxing class. At night, during week days, I usually go out for a drink or dinner with friends and end my day either playing the piano or singing.
What’s next for you? What we can expect of Joy in 2020?
Another single hopefully soon!
Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself, your music or the show?
I love traveling and road trips. I’m also a wine and chocolate lover! And I love Opera! ♥️
